Product description Review: Great product - Easy and effective Review: Good Performance, Frustrating Setup & Unexpected Paid Alert Feature - I had mixed experiences with this WiFi water leak detector. Once it’s up and running, it performs well, but getting there took more effort than it should have. First, the printed instructions included in the box are extremely minimal. There is a QR code that takes you to download the Tuya/Smart Life app, but the app itself offers very little guidance. What ultimately helped was the setup video on the desertcart product page. That video walks through the entire process and is much more useful than the included documentation. However, it moves quickly, and I found myself pausing and rewinding several times, especially when things didn’t work correctly on the first attempt. Connecting to my home Wi-Fi required multiple tries. I repeated the exact same steps several times before it finally connected. I didn’t change anything, it just eventually worked. That part was frustrating and felt inconsistent. Opening the unit to install the battery was also more difficult than expected. The included plastic “guitar pick” tool simply bent and would not pop the case open. I ended up using a wide-bladed screwdriver to carefully open it instead. After setup, performance was excellent. When the sensor contacts water, it triggers within a couple of seconds and emits a very loud alarm (which can be silenced from the app). The adjustable alarm volume and duration settings are nice features. However, the biggest surprise, and disappointment, was learning that remote SMS or phone-call notifications require an additional paid service. This was not clearly indicated in the listing. The plans offered include one-time payment options (for example, $19.99 for 200 SMS + 100 calls, or $15.99 for 100 SMS + 50 calls), as well as subscription variations. I understand that SMS/call infrastructure has a cost, but discovering this only after setup did not leave a great impression. The standard app push notifications do work without additional fees, so for now I plan to place the unit in the drip pan of my water heater and rely on local alarm + app notifications rather than purchasing an alert plan. In summary: Detection speed and alarm performance: Excellent Setup experience and documentation: Frustrating Unexpected paid remote alert feature: Disappointing It works well once configured, but buyers should be aware of the setup challenges and the additional cost for SMS/call alerts.

Helpful Peace of Mind After a Leak
We recently had a leak in the attic that has already been fixed, so this was more about having some extra peace of mind afterward. I wanted something in place that could help us keep an eye on it without constantly having to check the area ourselves. For that kind of use, it feels like a smart thing to have, especially when you want to catch a problem early instead of finding out too late. What makes it useful is the simple fact that it can notify us if water shows up again. That is really the whole reason I got it, and it helps make the setup feel worthwhile. It gives me a little more confidence knowing there is something up there watching the area in case another leak starts. For a spot like an attic where problems can go unnoticed, that kind of alert matters. The main thing I cannot really speak to yet is long term reliability since that only shows over time. Hopefully it never has to prove itself in a real situation, but having it there still feels like a good precaution. For our situation, it has been a practical way to add some reassurance after dealing with a leak once already.

Using near condensation pump they tends to freeze
I have an on-demand water heater in my attic for our master suite that has a condensation drain pump. In the winter, the drain tube can freeze outside causing this to back up and my pump to run for hours if not days before I catch it. I added a stainless pan under the pump to catch any overflow in hopes that this alarm will sound to let me know if the pump ever fails or it simply gets backed up so much that it overflows. Setup is pretty easy. There’s a QR code on the box for downloading the app. That said, I looked to the actual Apple App Store for the SmartLife app so I knew it was coming from a trusted source. Install the batteries, run the app to add a device, click and hold the button on the back of the device (after you remove the cover) and it will sync to the app. I tried adding this to my SmartThings app but didn’t have any success. Instructions are missing step one and begins with step two. The kit comes with a small tool used to push in the indent in order to get the cover off. This was a big fail for me so I used a small flathead screwdriver to get it off. No issues once connected and tested that it works as an audible sound came on when both leads connected to moisture. Gives me a bit more peace of mind knowing I have a backup alarm. I plan to 3d print a clasp to mount the sensor to my pan as it didn’t come with anything. Double sided adhesive disk is included for the alarm.

Great alerting companion!
Easy to setup! We have a small leak in the basement, by window well. Happens during very heavy rain. This will help me get things cleaned up much faster when it happens until we can get it repaired. Once we do, I plan to use this in a sump pump well where I don't have a backup yet.

Good Protection with Some Setup Frustration
This ended up being a solid addition for monitoring potential leaks, especially in areas that aren’t checked often. The main reason for getting it was simple—catch a problem early instead of finding out after damage is already done—and it does that part well. Once everything is set up, it works as expected. The sensor reacts quickly when it detects water, and the alarm is loud enough to get attention right away. App notifications also come through reliably, which is really the main benefit if you’re not home. Setup is where it can be a little hit or miss. It’s not overly complicated, but it may take a couple tries to get it connected to WiFi, and the instructions could be clearer. Not a huge issue, just something to be aware of going in. The build itself is compact and easy to place, and the probe cable makes it more flexible for different spots like under appliances or near a water heater. Battery operation is convenient, and the low battery alert is a nice touch. One thing worth noting is that while app notifications are free, SMS or phone alerts require an extra paid service. Not necessary for most setups, but it’s something that could catch people off guard. Overall, it does what it’s supposed to do and adds a layer of protection and peace of mind. A few minor setup frustrations, but once it’s running, it’s reliable and useful.

Peace of mind once it's set up
I got this remote water leak sensor to install on the hot water tank of my out of town vacation home. There's always been a concern that if the water heater leaked, I wouldn't know about it unless I was at the home (which may be several months). The physical part of setting up the detector is straight forward; open the case, install the batteries (included) and mount the detector and probe ( one meter long wire) on the water heater. The hard part is installing the app, setting up the wifi connection and getting the app to recognize the detector. The video in the Amazon description is helpful. It took a couple of tries to get the app, phone settings and detector to connect. Once the detector is recognized by the app, testing the detector by putting the probe in water resulted in a LOUD alarm by the detector and a notification on my Iphone. The detector seems fairly sensitive and quickly set off the alarm once the probe was put in water. Make sure to change the two AAA batteries at least once a year. As noted in the description, multiple detectors can be installed wherever water leaks are a concern. The detector is reasonably priced for all the grief and damage a water leak can cause.
