So happy to have received a lock that I can feel ...
So happy to have received a lock that I can feel secure about when locking my bike. A friend of mine has a son that is a street musician. He had informed me that he has seen men, with wire crusher/cutters that cut through thin wire twine locking devices, come on the streets regularly to steal bicycles like they are on a beat doing their job. Although my bicycle had not gotten stolen under a similar thicker device, my friend's son advised me that the U-locks were much more effective deterrents against thieves. Both my son's and husband's bikes had gotten stolen, so I wanted a new super secure lock for mine. I've noticed people "casing" my bike in the front of my house.I looked in local bike shops to price the U-locks and was pleased to find this top of the line Kryptonite New York U-lock on Amazon for $30-$50 cheaper than the bicycle stores. I paid between $70-$80 for my New York lock with my Amazon points discount. The Transit FlexFrame Bracket was easy to install. I made sure that the piece of slip resistant rubber was thoroughly covering the underside of the strap that attaches the bracket to the bike. I installed the bracket to the middle bar on the right side of my bike close to the handlebars. Unfortunately, the previous reviews were correct, that the flex frame bracket keeps slipping after prolonged use. It is useless to me now, because the lock keeps slipping around, either hitting my front tire or getting in the way of my pedaling. Before prolonged use, when I discovered that the reviews were correct about the transit flex frame bracket slipping, daily, I could conveniently remove the lock, before I took the U-bar off of the bike to secure it. It would be nice if the flex frame bracket would stay secure while in transit. The lock is very heavy, and being able to remove the lock before I took off the U-bar lessened the chances of pinching or smashing my fingers, or dropping the unit on my foot. It was easy to release the U-bar and transfer it around the bicycle storage bar and my bike, and then conveniently place the lock on the U-bar. When I was ready to unlock my bike, I would conveniently slide the U-bar back onto the Transit FlexFrame Bracket and place the lock back on the secured U-bar. Maybe someone could come up with a better design for the flex frame bracket? The rubber piece that goes between the bike and the strap that is supposed to keep the bracket from slipping gets bunched up after prolonged use, not giving enough slip coverage. After having used this lock for approximately 1 month, I found another review that is correct about this lock, that sometimes the lock will not turn to lock the lock. I have, upon several occasions been late to class, because it took me 10-15 minutes to get the lock to lock properly. I think that one reviewer said, that they had to walk home with their bike still locked up, because they could not get the lock open and the key broke off. Not sure what that is all about. Gonna try WD40. You'd imagine for an $80plus lock that you would not have this problem. It's a little bit ridiculous. Well, once the lock is on, it is definitely secure. Hopefully those of us that have purchased this lock will not find our bicycles locked to some pole somewhere without being able to remove it. It would be nice to ask for an exchange if I continue to have this problem. Even locks under $10 can be easier to open and close.

A great, heavy duty and tough u-lock!
For the price and the level of security of this u-lock (9 out of 10 rating), I recommend this for every bike rider even if you believe you ride in a safe environment. It has a 16mm hardened MAX-Performance shackle and double deadbolt locking mechanism. It just looks, feels and is a high quality tough u-lock. However it is an 8 inch shackle rather than a 9 inch shackle so that is either a good thing or bad thing. A slightly smaller shackle means more security as thieves would have more difficulty in using pry bars or jacks and it means less weight for you to carry (4.35 pounds). It is also means you may have difficulty to lock your bike on certain poles, bike racks or your locking method. If I try to use the u-lock through frame's seat tube, rear tire and post, it is possible depending on a small post but it is real tight. It may not work on some posts though. Here is another method that I like and would give more clearance for the shackle to a post... Use the u-lock through chain stay, rear tire and post. 3rd option? You could use the sheldon brown method and use the u-lock just on the rear wheel to post if the other methods don't work as it protects the frame and rear wheel. I still get nervous with the sheldon brown method because it doesn't take much time and effort to saw through a rear wheel with a handsaw and the thief could take the rest of your bike. Just try to fill the shackle so thief would have trouble with pry bar or jack. You should think about what bike racks and posts you use. As for the flexframe bracket... The lock is 8 inches and 4 pounds so it is pretty big and heavy. I can't even fit it on my bike because I have a water bottle cage connected on. I would rather just put the u-lock in a backpack. Maybe I would connect a Kryptonite evolution mini-5 if I had one as it much smaller and weighs a tad over 2 pounds? If you can use the kryptonite new york u-lock in a CORRECT, good locking method that protects your frame and rear wheel at same time, I would highly recommend it because it is a great u-lock. Also you could use a kryptoflex cable attached to the u-lock like I do and protect your front wheel. You can't be too safe.Update: I ditched the backpack and I installed the u-lock and the flexframe bracket on my topeak rear bike rack. Getting rid of the backpack with the locks and using a bike rack is making my bike trips much faster. I do recommend the flexframe bracket. I put it on a thin tube and it is tight. I also added nite ize rubber twist (thicker 24 inch twist) to bracket to add extra holding security. Those twists are really strong. The bracket won't be moving at all.

This is the Gold Standard
I love the key hole protector , the key does feel flimsy like some have complained about . I have a little trouble with opening but forcing it is not the answer you gently wiggle it and it will open without force eventually . You never should put enough force to damage the key but I can see how it could happen . The main problem is wheels are no longer 4 inches or less wide and at 4 by 8 inches which is a security compromise it is hard to get more then the main frame on a fixed object . Truly and I learned too late the new standard is to use the forgetabout it chains which are more expensive and very , very heavy . I use this when I leave my bike unattended overnight doing the full lockup with cable on accessories with the bike indoors . I have never heard of anyone using the insurance to see if they pay for a theft and I hope I never have too . If I ever build another home I will make sure to engineer items to lock too over just having the bike wheels locked to the frame or in the way of my work bench fastened to it . I do not have the space for my own rack fixed to my floor but I am thinking about it with a pole barn . When I bought my home I had nothing but a broken rocker , silverware for one and air mattress with sheets and a pillow . How it has filled to overflowing over the years is amazing , a pain and yet a blessing at the same time .

Nice lock, shame about the bracket
Reading the reviews criticising the bracket I was in two minds about buying this lock. On the one hand were all the reviews saying this was one of the best locks on the market (if not THE best) and on the other were the people saying it had the worst bracket. It didn't help that you can't examine the bracket in a shop because it is completely hidden by the packaging. I eventually decided to buy the lock and if the bracket was as bad as people were saying attach it to the bike with bungee cords or something. As for the lock itself, I haven't taken an angle grinder to it so I have to take on trust that it is as good as the reviews say. All I can report is that it is pretty substantial and my bike hasn't been stolen yet.Returning to the bracket, I was agreeably surprised that it was not as flimsy as some reviewers have suggested. Possibly it has been upgraded. I would hesitate to call it good but it appears at first sight to be adequate. That is more than can be said of the instructions. As has already been pointed out, these consist of a single piece of paper. The pictures are so small you can't tell what is being illustrated and the text seems to have been written by someone whose first language is not English, which is odd because Kryptonite is an American company. I can only marvel at the fact that someone with such an inability to communicate should get a job writing instruction leaflets. I have never before seen such a simple procedure described so incomprehensibly. Fortunately, it isn't rocket science and it fairly obvious how the bits fit together when you look at them. The instructions can therefore be safely consigned to the bin.The bracket consist of two blocks. The inner block attaches to the bicycle and the lock clips to the outer block. The two blocks are connected by a screw around which they rotate so the lock can be mounted in any orientation. The inner block is attached to the bike by a nylon strap, which is connected to a buckle-like plate. Between the strap and whichever part of the bike you are attaching it to there is a thin rubber shim to stop it sliding. The strap threads through a slot in the shim at each end but the rubber is so flimsy I doubt that will keep them together for long. I can only hope that friction alone will do the job.The strap is attached to the plate at one end, wraps round the bike and threads through a slot on the opposite side of the plate. The inner block is then stuffed over the top of the plate. The only thing holding the strap tight is the friction of the block being held over the plate. It seems secure enough for now but time will tell. The inner block is then placed in position and the screw passed through both blocks to a threaded hole in the plate. Only once the screw is in place is everything held in position. This means that if you want to adjust the bracket's position or orientation you have to take everything apart again. Without doing this there is no way to loosen the strap on the bike. This can be irritating if, like me, you need to experiment with different positions. On the bright side, you only have to install the bracket once.

Vermutlich eines der besten Schlösser das man kaufen kann
The media could not be loaded. Dies ist mein zweites New York Kryptonite Schloss. Thick D lock, poor bracket and mounting mechanism
UPDATE: 09/06/13:I'm dropping this to 3/5 stars, simply because the mounting bracket has broken into pieces. As I came to tighten it, on my Cannondale SL2 29er - the screw bit on the lock just broke apart (it was loose on my frame so I had to tighten it)I don't find that acceptable, as now I'm forced to carry the lock on my handlebars (unless I have a bag to put it in)I'm baffled to think they created a great, sturdy lock with such a HORRIBLE bracket and mount. Disappointed in that respect. My old review which received 4/5 is below (around 2 weeks old from the above mentioned):The D lock is huge, and extremely heavy too. I can't comment on bike theft just yet, as I've not had any thieves cut it or attempt to steal my bike. However, I can be certain that this lock will take considerable amount of time with a hack saw, or even an angle grinder. Security wise, I'm quite happy with this lock. I'm also re-assured, after a friend, who knows a few bike thieves, told him that they walk past bikes with the "yellow or orange locks" - This lock, thus might deter thieves from trying to steal it. Do remember though, if there is a will, there is always a way. A professional thief can always break any type of lock, but the size of it, and its difficulty, just grants you extra time. If your bike is rally worth a lot of money, it shouldn't be left out in the public, or in a secured location. Now for the bracket - as others mentioned, it is quite weak and also quite troublesome. The D lock does stay in place, when riding, and the bracket is securely tightened to my frame, however removing the D lock from the bracket is extremely hard. It frustrates me at times, as I literally have to bash the lock with considerable amount of force, in order to get it out of its mount.I wish more time was spent designing this.Apart from that, the lock seems very good.I have also registered it, with my bike on the Kryptonite website - giving me additional insurance, in case it is broken.Overall a solid 4/5. It loses one point for not having a better bracket.

Bike Lock worked Great - Customer Service from Tredz is world class!
SO, I rarely leave reviews for anything but:a) The Bike lock is good, solid, I did need to buy a different holder for it after seeing all the other notices on here, but I have been using it since Jan 2013 and the bike feels safe with it. Yes it's very heavey but of course it is. However, no-one to my knowledge has even tried to tamper with it while I have had it.b) MOST IMPORTANTLY For some strange reason, when I went to use the lock the other day to lock my bike up, the lock did not unlock, the key did not engage in the lock somehow so I could not separate the lock. Rendering it useless - luckily my bike wasn't locked to anything at the time! I pre sue this is a rare mechanical fault. I emailed Kryptonite customer services as it had been over a year since the purchase. I heard nothing back for 3 days and still haven't. THEN I called Tredz. I got a very friendly helpful person who said the lock is still covered by warranty and to send it back to them (they cover postage) and they will have it fixed or replaced. He was kind, helpful, courteous and the process seems very simple and straight forward. When trying to buy stuff on Amazon you can spend ages comparing items, postage and packing etc, but rarely do you get to consider follow up care and customer service. Thank god I bought from Tredz because now this £55 lock will be replaced with the least hassle and I'm pretty sure that that wouldn't be happening now if I had bought from many other sellers.I would suggest you go with these people and having looked on their actual company website (to find the contact details) I would consider buying more from them in the future and directly.Good customer service is important and in this case it is saving me money and hassle. All the best, fellow cyclists. And thank you TredzFelix
