So with the adapter, you can plug the radio into something and it will use your car antenna or some other antenna and get further range? How far?

Your antenna is the most important aspect in getting good range on your CB.  For the beginner, your best bet is to buy the Midland 18-2442, Center Load Mag Mount Mobile CB Radio Antenna, available on Amazon for $19.99.  It works perfectly with the Midland 75-822 unit.  The magnetic base is strong enough to stay put until you remove it.  It should be centered on the roof of your car, or truck cab, to radiate the best signal.

There are many magnetic car mount antennas offered....can you suggest the cheapest yet most effective antenna to go with this unit?

C.  -  I bought the Midland 18-2442 magnetic external antenna and was happy with it.  It has a very long coax tha will pretty easily reach anywhere on your car and into to the radio. It also extended the range over the included short antenna by a lot. I estimated about 1/4-1/2 mile range with small antenna, and 1-2 mile range with the external antenna. This was in hills of Arkansas.

are there handle bar mounts for the radio for motorcycle?

The only one I've found was was from J@M model PACB-409-15.  And they have a high opinion of it.  I slightly modified an ARKON mount with the small pouch. I cut down the belt clip to fit in the bracket on dry days and use the pouch on wet days.

How far will these radios reach?

The coverage range of CB radios on 27Mhz is almost entirely dependent on using a decent external antenna.  With only 4 watts output on a relatively long wavelength (11 meters) they really need a full-length, 102" tall, 1/4 wave whip antenna center mounted on top of a car or truck roof to achieve their very best mobile performance. That is not practical today, so most CB antennas today are physically shortened - which makes them more manageable, but less efficient.  As a general rule of thumb, taller antennas will work better in a mobile setting.
